Aunt Dori gave us books as gifts every birthday, Hannukah, and graduation. I loved The Wise Men of Chelm stories. My favorite told of a couple arguing over who should close the door. Eventually they stopped speaking to one another. Winter came, snow entered the house, but no one closed the door. Come spring, a travelling barber shaved Max's beard and all the hair from his head because Max wouldn't speak to stop him. When his wife returned home she exclaimed in horror. Max said, "Sadie, you've spoken first. Now go shut the door."
Fifty years later, I still get a thrill to open the book and see Dori's inscription inside. She was, hands-down, our favorite aunt. Was it a relative, teacher, perhaps a librarian who opened your world? I'd love to hear who turned you on to reading!
